Homemade Vanilla sponge cake with strawberry filling

I attempted to bake a "proper" layer cake that is fully frosted and decorated with fresh cream last 2 days. I was dead tired after the whole cake was finally done! By the way, the cake tastes good with the cream, strawberries and nutty almond combination. The sponge layer is sweet and moist, overall a tasty and delicious cake ;-))

Bak Chang aka. Rice Dumpling

I only started craving for it recently coz my friend has made his own Bak chang and gave some for me. Instead of hoping to have more bak chang to eat, I decided to make my own bak chang after for so many years of eating ppl bak chang.

Ingredients and preparations:

Marinated pork, heh bee, black eye pea, glutinous rice, mushrooms and dried oyster.

Chung leafs and dried grass when it is still dry. I have soaked in cool water for overnight.

Boiled for an hour in pressure cooker

The chung that I have made. Out of shape but at least they didn't burst open while it was boiling in the water. The wrapping process requires a lot of work, stuffing all the ingredients into the cone shaped bamboo leaves.

Taa daa..... my own homemade bak chang.

Nice?! Actually it was a bit salty but the taste was still delicious. I will make it again next time and improve my wrapping skill.

Our Church was having spring picnic at Gruga Park in Essen. My hubby and I were learning to play one kind of sport instrument called Diablo, if I'm not mistaken.

My hubby is a quick learner. He can just threw up to the sky and catched it back with the string and rolled it again, which I can't do it.

I was trying to stabilize it before rolling the Diablo just like a yo-yo.

Slaughter the Lobster!

This is the lobster we caught in Shikinejima Island. It is extremely difficult to catch such creature and our hero Take got it at last after hours of waiting! I think, he couldn't sleep for the whole night. To happy like just winning a lottery!

As u can see that this is quite heavy. It weights till the end of scale.

Not only heavy but the lobster's head is very hard to cut through. Take used all his strength and power to slaughter that!

At last cut into 2 part. Doesn't it look fresh and sweet?

After lobster dinner, we went to the river side nearby Take and Nao's house to play fireworks. What a wonderful day we had!!!!

This crab is called the Hanasaki Kani 花咲蟹. It comes from the north of Japan.

My task on that evening is to put this monster into this giant pot with hot boiling water inside!

Today is Nao's birthday. Take bought this crab by online shopping. Thank you Take and Nao for treating us so well in Japan!

Sorry for the lack of updates. I was not able to updates my blog in Malaysia because of no internet at home and I was lazy to go to cybercafe for at least 3 weeks! After coming to Germany, we were busy to clean our house and unpack our stuffs. Not only we hosted our friends for a week, we also attended a wedding. We could only rest down on last Saturday. What a hectic and tired weeks we had. -- I think I've got a bit lazy to write and perhaps unable to express out my feeling when looking at those photos from quite some time ago. Hhhmmm...== I will try my best!

Shikinejima Island

Last monday was Umi no Hi (Day of Ocean) in Japan - public holiday! We went to Shikinejima island situated 200km southwards of Tokyo. These are some of the pictures!

Early in the morning at 7:30 am, we headed to the island with this pink boat.

This was our traditional Japanese dinner prepared by the house owner. Many varieties until I almost could not finish it.

After our dinner we went to natural Onsen (Hot spring) for relaxing. This is a tunnel connected to the Onsen in which we can feel the air temperature of the water vapor. It is hot like sauna.

Here is the natural public Onsen beside the ocean.

Hot spring water comes from iron sulfide rock. In this hot spring, the cold ocean water mixes with the 80 degrees spring water. The water temperature is okay for relaxing. Hot Hot Hot!!!l

The winner of fishing among 5 of us. I caught 2 fishes at one time with the same rod. Really amazing and it was my first time as well!!!!

Take caught the giant prawn after few hours. Congratulation Take!!!

After our fishing we heading to a beach for siput hunting. In Japan one of this siput kind costs about 500 yen in seafood restaurant. But we are so lucky that on that day everybody hunt siput as a souvenir.

Right after collecting siput from the sea, we grilled!

Still grilling and I can't wait to try it.

This siput looks like a fat worm. Geli nyah!!!! Actually I was reluctant to eat coz of disgusting look. I still prefer balitong.

Last tuesday, I attended Logos English bible study at Tokyo university. One big group of young Koreans came to Japan for a mission trip. Just happened that they have been invited by one missionary leader from Logos bible study to minister to us before they go back to Korea the next day.

Gigantic big bowl noodle

For the past one month, we were so curious about this noodle restaurant. Everytime we past by many people queued up till outside of the restaurant just like in ipoh where ppl queue up for good food. Last Sunday, we decided to try out the noodle restaurant before we go back to Malaysia. Thank God that we only waited for just 15 mins to get seat. When I turned around to look at the next table, what made me so shocked was that everyone has very big bowl of noodle even the skinny ladies!

U can see from the chopstick and the size of big bowl noodle.

Daa... daa..... 4 gigantic big bowl noodle. I almost can't finished it, eat till jelak.

These are the sample food plastic for display. Really gigantic bowl. Now I discovered why is this restaurant so famous - because of the big bowl noodle!

We always failed every Saturday to visit the famous fish market in Tokyo because we overslept. The best time to visit Tsukiji is 6 a.m because of the famous Tuna Auction. This time we made it to visit at 10 a.m.

Many people line up at every sushi restaurant in the fish market. Many people are crazy for that in spite of extreme hot weather.

I had my bangs cut by Nastuko at her cafe. Doesn' t it sound strange? Instead of having my hair cut at hair saloon! To cut only bangs in Japan is not worth to pay for it. In order to save 800 yen and skip an extra trip to the salon, I visited Natsuko and asked her spontaneously to trim my bangs.

Yesterday after church my hubby asked me for favor to jog in a park. I was reluctant coz I hate jogging. But because of health I decided to jog with him. I realized that after jogging my body became fitter and my hubby is getting more strength too!

Last week we had grilled seafood at hawker stall. Talking about seafood is our main topic because we are the freak for that. Staying in Germany is quite tough for me because i can hardly eat seafood. As now we are in Japan, almost every week we eat seafood. Hmmmm.....If I go for body check-up, maybe I will have high cholesterol, but who cares!!

Ahh, just within a month in Japan I already gained 3 kg! I can't control myself from eating so much. This caused me to be more concerned about my body of being out of shape and getting chubby. As for my body's sake, I force myself to exercise more before going back to Malaysia the next "makan" mission.

If u look at our face, u will know that we are happy to have our paradise seafood.

This is the church we attend. There are 2 branches at 2 different locations in Tokyo. We thank God that He bless us with good fellowship with the people here. We feel home in Tokyo because of them.

Asakusa

Last Saturday we visited the popular Asakusa kannon. This is Tokyo's most sacred and spectacular temple. Japan is very famous for temple, temple and temple. Actually I'm not keen on visiting their temples. Since it is so popular, why not just take some photos from there.

Crab is called Kani in Japanese. I desire to eat Kani for quite some time. Even though end of this month I will going back to Malaysia but I can't wait any longer. Today I decided visit Ameyoko Market at Ueno. Ameyoko is a place where you can get everything at discount price, quite similar to the Petaling street in Kuala Lumpur.

This is a fresh crab that I bought from the market. Actually this is my first time buying and cooking crab. I tried to bargain from 2000 yen down to 1000 yen. Not cheap u know!!!

After so much effort and energy to cook this fresh crab, the result was super delicious until my hubby was leaking his 5 fingers.

My brother in law took us to "Roppongi hills tower" after dinner. My brother in law bring us to the 51st floor for free. It was a gorgeous place and we could enjoy the night view of Tokyo. But, we didn't have chance to go up to the observation deck on the 54th floor, on which you can enjoy the view open-air. I usually have no interest at night view. But 360° view of Tokyo is really amazing!

Wearing Kimono

When u are in Japan don't just only try japanese foods, sleep with futon or to watch kabuki theater, but also try to wear the traditional japanese Kimono. I had been wanting always to wear kimono and just waiting for the right timing to go to Japan. Now I am staying in Tokyo and got to know a japanese friend who is working in Kimono shop. Hooray!!!! My dream came true at last!

Nice, pretty??? Do I look like japanese girl with this kimono? Actually this is summer kimono. There are different kinds of kimono depending on the season. That is why this kimono is thiner and simple.

I had been searching around for saloon with reasonable price. Wanna just try out Japanese hairstyle in Tokyo. Since from day one till today I see so many japanese girl with beautiful blond hair and that really attracts me. They look so gorgeous!!! I can't resist myself from trying it.

This was the hair saloon that I had my hair cut and dyed.

Behind me is the professional hairstylist trying to examine my hair colour. I am really satisfied with his gifted hand to cut my hair.

We started to travel on Monday from the north to the south of Japan.

This is Miyajima Island. Behind us is the famous "torii" ( Shinto gate) standing "above" the sea.

The speciality in Miyajima Island is grilled oyster.

The A-Bomb Dome, the remain of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima.

First day in Tokyo

At last we arrived safely in Japan after 13 hours flight. There was no delay and everything was smooth. Once we came out from Narita Airport, it was so cold at about 10°C. It was raining the whole day :( We took limousine bus to our apartment in Tokyo. At that time, I was still having jet lag and tired. We put down our luggage and met my hubby's brother and his future wife for lunch at sushi restaurant and went for sightseeing in Roppongi area. Then we proceeded our dinner in a sumo restaurant in Ebisu. The food was super nice and we tried raw horse meat too! It was a bit chewy but tasty. Before we left the restaurant we took photo together with a sumo fighter.

We visited Cologne last month. Here are some photos of our visit.

This is the Cologne Cathedral. We climbed 509 steps of the spiral staircase up to a viewing platform about 98 metres above the ground. Phew.......quite tiring. It needs a lot of stamina to climb up.

The Cologne Cathedral is a World Heritage Site and is one of the world's largest and tallest churches. During 2nd World War, all buildings in Cologne were destroyed except this one.

As we passed by few shops, we saw this fascinating band in the Game shop. They were promoting the new game called Wii Rock band. Those who want to be Rock Star on stage should have this as beginners.

This photo shows we were really tired after walking the whole day. We decided to rest and had a nice ice blended coffee and a piece of rich chocolate cake at McCafe. We really satisfied because at last we visited Cologne as we had planned this long ago. Mission accomplished! Yeah!!!

Vanilla and Chocolate Muffins

I have 2 eggs in my freezer waiting for me to use it because it has been for a week already and then I came across this recipe while browsing through bakingmum.com. Hers looked really good, so soft and fluffy that I just need to give this a try. Instead of following her recipe to bake chocolate chips, I used my own flavour to make it vanilla and chocolate muffins.

It's truly delicious. It's just like what she said, sooooooo good!

Thai Pandan (Screwpine Leaves) Chicken. This dish make me a lot of effort to fry.

Red Bean Bun. This time don't know why the skin texture of the bun is not soft enough after steaming. Maybe because I didn't mix with milk and butter into the bun flour. Haiz.....But yet, the taste is still very nice to eat.

Let me show u this outstanding technology in London.

I saw this in the toilet of the Eye of London's ticket shop and was quite fascinated by it. The Airblade is a new way of drying hands and it took just 10 seconds to dry. Cool huh..... I think it is good to have this since it saves a lot of tissues.

One thing about being so far away from Malaysia (where u can find Asian food!) is that I have to make my own whenever my craving arises! So these are the dishes that I'd made recently.

Bubur Cha Cha

Braised Mushroom with special sauces. I made some wantons for soup and kept some for deep frying.

KL Hokkien Mee. I can't find the Dai Lok Mee. I can actually substitute with Udon Mee or Idon Mee. So I tried to use Idon Mee to cook and it tastes good.

Can you believe it's been 2 years already?!? Time flies so fast like a blink of an eye. And things are still absolutely wonderful. :-)

I would like to say thank to my wonderful, strong, kind hubby for the past 2 years. He has always been there for me especially when I need him. Thank God for being with us and guiding us in this marriage.

We celebrated our meaningful anniversary at ''Rhodos'', a Greece Restaurant. We had a great dinner.

Wounds that heal

Years ago I went through a time of painful emotional loss. A missionary friend who had experienced a similar situation comforted me and then offered these words: “In the future, Christ can use your emotional wounds to help heal others.” Later, on a trip to visit a missionary training school, I lodged in a place where I saw a portrait of Jesus’ nail-pierced hands. Below it, on a music stand, was the sheet music “He Touched Me.”

Rarely have I experienced a string of circumstances that spoke so vividly to my situation. In His gracious providence, God used them to comfort and direct me. It became clear that healing flows from the wounded hands of Jesus and that our wounds can help others.

In hindsight, I have learned how God’s comfort in suffering can build bridges to those in pain. Paul made this point clear: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Cor. 1:3-4).

My hubby and I craved for Nasi Lemak. Luckily, I could buy this from Asian shop - Sambal Manis. Even though this Sambal is slightly different from Malaysian one, but it still tastes spicy.

I fried sardine with this and managed to make simple, yet delicious Nasi Lemak.

I love it. I cooked this for the first time. My hubby says it's a great success.

We had our reunion dinner in a cantonese restaurant in Essen on the Chinese New Year Eve. In Malaysia, we gather normally with our relatives at grandparent's home. We eat, laugh, have fun, chat, give and receive ''Ang Pows (red envelope with money inside)''. Like Christmas in Europe, this is the best time to catch up with family and friends.

We are far away from you all. Yet I'm happy to have dinner with our best friends here.

Team retreat to Winterberg

Since we had been so hardworking for God, we rewarded ourself by a retreat to Winterberg. It took about 2 hours drive from our place to reach there. This place is famous for skiing but at that time the weather was above 6 degree Celcius. No snow.

We rented a family house furnished with small kitchen and bedrooms.

Daa..Daaaa..... This is our simple and comfortable bedroom.

This is Schweinhaxe (knuckle). The taste was good but they took away the most delicious fat crispy skin from the meat that I was craving for.

Wow, it's been quite a while since I last posted. Nevertheless it is never to late to wish u all happy new year!!!!

Recently hubby and I just came back from a camp in Black Forest. It was organized by our Hope Stuttgart church.

These are the participants from all over Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Singapore etc. (roughly 80 persons). During the day, we could decide for different activities like skiing, forest tracking, horse riding, visiting waterfall, swimming in hot spring and so on. Camp programs started always after our dinner - funny presentations, listening to the Words of God, praising and worshiping God. After that, we played games, chatted and those who were hungry would have their supper and etc.

Mighty lady and men got ready to have great fun! This was my first time trying snowboard. I ended up with pain all over my body especially my butt.

Snow on new year eve! Very romantic and nice feeling to see tiny snow flakes falling down from above. Thank God for His creation.

We were invited to celebrate Christmas eve in typical german way at Kajin's home. As usual everyone has to play a game. Everyone shall win the game one by one, and therefore get their present under the Christmas tree. During the game, everyone has to do some 'performance', like singing, dancing, answering questions, etc. Then we took dinner together. We had 2 roasted ducks in that evening. Went home after 1 am.

We invited my Korean classmate (Kyungmi Kim) for a dinner and a night stay with us. We enjoyed the food cooked by a professional chef, that's me! That was a fantastic night! I really thank God for knowing her because she has a simple heart and yet she can make people joyful especially when she smiles.

We had dinner in a restaurant with very tempting fatty giant meat! At last we tried this after longing for months. The portion of meat we ate was may be what we normally eat in a week!!! The taste was very nice, especially the crispy skin. This remembers me of the Malaysian Cha Siew Yuk.

Yesterday night my hubby planned a surprise party for me. I was so touched and full of joy that I could only express my many thanks to him. We really had a wonderful night together.

While writing this blog. I reflect back those time before we married. I'm thankful to have my hubby. I really want to thank God for giving me the patience and endurance to wait 4 years for someone I love, even though it is hard sometimes to face the reality that he was not always beside me. Thanks as well for my chee muis, pastor and family who always support our relationship and lend a hand to us to move on when we were far away from each others. Now we have been married for almost 2 years. Time flies so fast, just like a blink of eye.

I am happy to have Jesus in my life who teaches me how to appreciate someone who is always there for me.

To me, today is a special day then the other days because not only I reflect back my previous age of 25, I welcome my new age of 26! I'm super young and beautiful. Yesterday I received a wonderful gifts from my beloved chee muis: Becky and Esther. I was so touched by receiving from them the lovely gift. How blessed I am to have them in my life as my very good friends. We had known each others for almost 19 years! What preserves our friendship until today? I know why. I'd a chance to visit my hubby company, got to know some friends from my hubby, where is his department and what does the company do. Besides that, we enjoyed the buffet, games and the live jazz music there.

After the church service, the Indian family invited us for lunch at their lovely home which is not far from where we stay. The family was so nice to us and they really live a simple life with the hope of God. We really enjoyed the atmosphere there and were happy to play with their 4 beautiful children.

The older son was so kind that he wants to make a special cake for us. Do u know how old is he? He is about 11 years old. At this age, he knows how to bake cake.

I am so blessed by someone whom I loved. I feel so joyful in my heart as my hubby told me that he would like to cook dinner for me. No word can describe how happy I was at that time. I accompanied my hubby to supermarket as he wanted to buy some vegetables. When I saw my hubby looking for vegetables and thinking what to cook, I smiled joyfully in my heart without my hubby realizing it. He is really a family man to me.

Today I went to pharmacy to buy medicine for my hubby. As I walked to the pharmacy, I saw an advertisement at a glass door, displaying "15 minutes free massage, please come and enjoy it!" So, why not to have a massage to relax myself. Then I asked the pharmacist whether the massage is free or not. The pharmacist said it is definitely free. Then I decided to register for the message and I was really satisfied although it was just only 15 minutes. From there, I learned some skills so that I too can massage my hubby. What a lucky day I had!. Thank God for the blessing.

This week was the 3rd week of my German course. I feel so good of being back to school again. I had not attended German lesson for almost 8 months, just because of so many things happened in between. So my German was getting worst. What to do? Anyway, I was so happy to join the class because I will be able to make new friends from all over the world. My classmate are from China, Korea, Palestine, Turkey, Canada, Russia, Iran and so on..... Most of my classmate are preparing to enter into university. Before that they need to sit for a German proficiency test.

Thank God that I'm able to cope with the grammar and my German knowledge is getting better. Last week, I invited 2 Korean classmate to lunch after our class. Even though it was hard for us to communicate and understand each others, it was good for us to train up speaking German with each others. Both of them are Christians and are very nice. They told me that their church has approximate 2000 members. They said this is normal in Korean churches!

I was so excited, as my German language course was going to start. 2 days before that, our first mission was to buy books needed for the course. So we went to the bookstore. Unfortunately, the books were already sold out. Not giving up, we went to another bookstore. But, the same happens - they were no more! I felt a bit disappointed. Without wasting time, we rushed to another bookstore. They were sold out in the 3rd bookstore too! I wondered what is so good about the books that they were sold out so fast.

Our mission failed and I felt disappointed. Then my hubby cheered me up and said, "don't worried, we can still order the books in Amazon". Do you know, to order books in internet, it takes about 2 working days. That day was Saturday, that means I could only get the books on Tuesday. Without the books for the first 2 days was a hard time for me because this may give wrong impression to others. Consequently, I had to share with another classmate whom I did not know before. Do you understand how I felt. I felt so embarrassed because I was the only one in the class without books . Those who experience this before will understand me.

So I've learned a lesson that I should buy books not at last minute. Anyway, thank God that the teacher was very understandable.

Recently, I met a non-believer Chinese girl at shopping centre nearby my house. We met each other before when Markus and I evangelized to her. She was interested in knowing God and asked a lot of questions about Jesus. She went together with us to church on Sunday. There was very good respond from her after attending the church. Now she wants to have bible study with us once a week if possible. We invited her and the boyfriend for a dinner last Thursday and she brought interesting fruits for us to eat.

This morning, as I woke up and did my devotion, I started to read Our Daily Bread in the internet. God's Word really encouraged me. In fact, I always think about myself very small, weak and discourage especially that I do not know how to convince non-believer to believe God. But yet, God reviewed to me about this passage that said, "Do you sometimes feel small and insignificant like an insect? When you do, remember that God showcases His wisdom and greatness through even the smallest things. That’s because His “strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9). I hope that whoever read this passage will able to lift up his or her souls today. Amen!

Recently, we bought a board game called "The Settlers of Catan". It is a game of trade and growth, set on the small island of Catan. From here, 3 to 4 players will reap the resources from the island, they will trade with the other inhabitants and grow, expand, and flourish. They will open trade routes across the sea, build vast cities, long highways, huge armies... all in about 75 minutes.

It's a wildly popular game, published by Kosmos Spiele Gallerie and currently taking the USA by storm in it's English form. It's easy to see why it's as huge as it is. It's simple, attractive, interactive, and constructive. Games where you start with a little and end up with a lot always seem to be popular, and this is no exception.

Wuppertal is located on the Wupper river south of the our town. One of the city's greatest attractions is the suspended monorail ("Wuppertaler Schwebebahn"), which was established in 1901. The tracks are 8 m above the streets and 12 m above the Wupper river. So, my hubby and I took a ride on this unique old-timer LRT (built in the 70s). Basically we were hanged above the river in the sky, riding from the first to the last station. We were very lucky because at the end we saw the oldest monorail, more than 100 years old, called the "Kaiserbahn". It means the "Emperor Train". Today, tourist must have special ticket to enter into this monorail, where they will be served luxuriously.

Evangelism

Last week was a busy week for me because some of my church members from Stuttgart, Berlin and even from Bangkok came to stay with us for 5 days. They came to help us to evangelise in universities and also on the streets. Thank God for them for helping us to reach out to students. We do evangelism everyday from morning till evening and I was so tired after that. It's not so easy actually to evangelise to people because u will be rejected or even being annoyed by the people. But God is so good to us that He will always give us the courage and boldness to face difficulties. "Thank u God for being with us in these 5 days as we do your work."

What a bad day today. It has been raining non-stop since yesterday evening. This is kind of "long life rain" in Germany and more rain is expected in the next 2 days. In fact, it should be summer this few months, but it is now like spring or autumn. I could hardly experience summer this year. What a weird weather. Hhmmmm......

May Yen's Farewell

Last Friday, we celebrated our dear sister May Yen's farewell. She will go back to Malaysia on this coming Thursday. Four of us, my hubby and I, May Yen and Leslie, we had a lot of fun that day. We didn't have big celebration, but just eating, chatting, taking pictures and playing with the digital camera whole night.

Düsseldorf

Last Saturday, we visited our capital city Düsseldorf. We spent nearly the whole day there and almost visited all the famous places there. The city is famous for its carnival and events, also for fashion and trade fairs, like the Boot Messe (worldwide leading in boats and watersports) and Igedo (worldwide leading in fashion). We were so tired as we walked so many miles, nevertheless we were very satisfied and we enjoyed the day.

Last Sunday, my hubby's pastor and his wife came to visit us all the way from Ipoh. Jeff drove us to visit his city in Cologne and brought us to one of his regular visited chinese restaurant for lunch.

Visiting Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial

Last Saturday, we went to visit the UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage in Essen City: The Zollverein . This was once the largest coal mine (built in 1932, closed in 1986) and coking plant (built in 1961, closed in 1993) in the world! Visitors now have access to the precincts, which frequently house temporary art exhibitions, for instance, La Primavera is a work of art by Maria Nordman, Red Dot Design Museum, Palace of Projects, Jewelry Product and etc. Besides, Restaurants and Cafe are available for visitors.

God answered prayer

I'm so glad that our prayer for the mission to reach out to the young ppl was answered. This morning, I woke up and had my quite time with God, I started to thank God that he had sent us brother and sister in Christ like Tarsis, Mukhti and May Yen for us to encourage us as well as to serve God together with us. I can see that God really shows us the steps how to reach out to ppl. Surprisingly, my husband received a call from a young German student yesterday. We did not know each other before and he would like to serve God with us. Wow! What a miracle God has done in our life as we waited for God.
As I thanked God for this, a song came to my mind from Don Moen: "When you've prayed every prayer that you know how to pray, just remember the Lord will hear and the answer is on it's way. Do you feel that the Lord has forgotten your need, just remember that God is always working in ways you cannot see."
I feel so excited and look forward to see how God directs our path as we do His will.
